RTÉ 2fm Toy Appeal for St Vincent de Paul, in association with SuperValu collects over 36,000 toys for families in need.
RTÉ 2fm joined forces again this year with leading charity St Vincent de Paul, and SuperValu, for the nation’s biggest ever charity toy appeal. Led by 2fm presenters, including Ryan Tubridy, Hector Ó hEochagain, Ruth Scott, Colm Hayes and Larry Gogan, the 2fm Toy Appeal aimed to make sure that no child in need was left without a toy this Christmas.
Now initial figures reveal that some 36,000 toys were collected for the appeal, up 44% on the number of toys collected last year. This means that St Vincent de Paul now have an additional 11,000 toys to distribute for Christmas 2011.
The campaign came in the wake of startling figures from St Vincent de Paul, who say that calls for help to the SVP regional offices have almost doubled over the past three years. Listeners were able to donate toys at SuperValu’s 193 stores nationwide; others donated online at www.2fm.ie/toyappeal and www.svp.ie/appeal-2011/2fm-toy-appeal
Says 2fm’s Ryan Tubridy: “This year more than ever, children all over Ireland need to be recession-proof at Christmas and given the pressure people are under, the response from 2FM listeners in the last few weeks has been extraordinary. I’ve always felt the fundamental decency of Irish people would shine through when required and this is proven by the fact that 36,000 children will wake up on Christmas morning smiling. The elves have done their work.”
Mairead Bushnell, National President, Society of St Vincent de Paul, says: "St. Vincent de Paul is absolutely delighted at the support for the RTÉ 2fm Toy Appeal campaign. The donations received will bring joy to many children who otherwise might have had a sad Christmas. The Irish public responded with toys, games, vouchers, music, books, cinema tickets and all the presents that cheer up children, and even teenagers, when Santa arrives. In total, an estimated 36,000 toys were donated along with donations from others who came on board at Eason, UCI, Littlewoods Ireland, Respond, Golden Pages, Dublin Bus and the many, many other businesses and kind individuals who set up collections for us.”
Ms Bushnell added that Christmas ”is a difficult time for anyone in need, and the generosity of the Irish people has been truly in evidence with the 2fm Toy Appeal".
Martin Kelleher, Managing Director, SuperValu, said: “SuperValu was delighted to support the RTÉ 2fm Toy Appeal again this year. 25,000 toys were collected via our store network last year. We are over the moon that upwards of 36,000 toys have been collected this year. What really appeals to us about this initiative is that the toys donated locally stay local, and with stores at the heart of 193 communities nationwide, this just goes to prove that we have most of the country covered.”
