TFT.JPGTOYS FOR TUBS

Count Me In!

Ryan Tubridy wants lots of toys for Christmas - not for himself, but for all the children around the country who will be in need this Christmas. We're working with our friends in St Vincent de Paul to make sure that no child is without a toy this Christmas morning. Are You In?

AthloneSnow.jpg

Greetings from a snowy Athlone this morning! Nicola Hudson from AA Roadwatch advises the nation on road conditions across the country. Just in case you missed the weather, it's frosty and icy in many places with a biting easterly wind. Occasional wintery showers of hail, sleet and snow will mainly affect parts of Leinster, east Ulster and possibly east Munster for a time later this morning and early afternoon, these falling mainly as sleet on the east coast but snow further inland with some thunder locally. Mainly dry elsewhere but bitterly cold with some winter sunshine developing. Top temperatures of 0 to 3 degrees.

Ryan was looking for a Russian hat and Paddy came to the rescue. Paddy has a real deal Russian hat which he got last year in Canada. He bought it for the craic but is happy to give it to Ryan to protect him from the elements.

Christy is a truck driver and he wanted to say thank you to a very kind gentleman who used his tractor to shift a load of snow off the road so Christy and his truck could get out. Caoimhe had no school today, which was adding to her good mood. She is missing her Biology exam but she hopes the snow will lay off a bit for the Trinity College Open Day tomorrow though.

Irene from Scully Guns and Tackle, Fishing & Angling Equipment. Pearse Street Athlone offered Ryan a pair of boots and hat to protect him from the snow.

Declan was in the middle of steaming his Christmas puddings. He lost his job in July - he was an engineer in construction sites. He is very busy sending out CVs inbetween honing cooking skills.

Laura's son David was born at home in the snow in 1982. Her husband and two young children were there to help her give birth. Her husband went around the village and got an elderly doctor who helped.   It was such a lovely time and all her neighbours were great. The snow brings out the best in everyone.

Ryan joined Shay Byrne in the pop up shop in the Golden Island Shopping Centre. The generous people of Athlone came in their droves with gifts, books, and loads of toys and vouchers for Toys For Tubs appeal. Huge thanks to you all!

***Dave Fanning Presents***

Dave_Fanning.jpg

Mary Reilly called in to tell Dave that she donated her kidney to her brother on 29th April 2009. Everything went really well - she had keyhole surgery in England. She was in hospital for two nights and she was back in work in a few weeks' time. Her brother is doing great too. He doesn't have to take half as many tablets as he used to.

This week will forever be played out in our memories and no doubt will feature on Reeling in the Years 2010 for years and years to come. It is quite possible it was one of the most significant political and economic series of events in the history of this great little nation.  Conor Brophy joins Dave in studio to re-cap on the week that was.

4 year plan.jpg

Shay Byrne reports from a world of pure imagination! Yes, the day has finally arrived - when small kids and big kids unite for a magical night of toys, toys, toys! We check in with Willy Wonka himself, Ryan Tubridy, to get a sneak preview of what to expect. The Late Late Toy Show ladies and gentlemen - tonight, 9.35pm on RTE One.

toy show.JPG

This week has been a rocky week for the Government, but what of the Opposition? First off, Edna Kenny went AWOL while the Left has formed a new alliance. It's all in a new political ad attack from Nob Nation...

Mary called in to say she's fed up listening to doom and gloom! She wants to remain as positive and upbeat as possible. She went to Dundrum Town Centre yesterday with E100.00 and spent it! She didn't use her credit card.

Dave Sherry took a drive to Cork to experience the new drive-in cinema that will open to the public tonight on Friday, November 19, with a showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1). It costs E16 per car and can fit 99 cars. There is a waterproof blue canvas structure and you park under that. They also give you a heater to keep warm. Although by himself, he had a great time!

Dave is joined on the line from London by US singer-songwriter, pianist, percussionist, actor and producer Josh Groban who has just released his latest album 'Illuminations' which includes a cover version of Declan O'Rourke's song 'Galileo'.

This week on Tubridy on RTE 2fm, we've teamed up with Quinn Direct, sponsor of RTE's The Late Late Show, to offer you at home the chance to join Ryan in the RTE studios on Friday November 26th for this year's Late Late Toy Show!

***CONGRATULATIONS TO PETER LOGAN FROM MOHILL IN CO. LEITRIM WHO HAS WON 2 TICKETS TO THIS YEAR'S THE LATE LATE TOY SHOW PLUS A MAGICAL CHRISTMAS SHOPPING WEEKEND IN DUBLIN, COURTESY OF QUINN DIRECT***

We spoke to Emma last Thursday on the show. Emma is a psychotherapist and she says to remember that there are resources to help those who are struggling. Don't avoid dealing with it - don't assume that it will all work out. Take the bull by horns, confront the problem - it's empowering. Deal with it NOW - you don't necessarily have to wait until Budget Day - if you're stretched now, you will be stretched after December 7th. You don't have to read the papers today - we all know where we will be hit today.  The more you read it, the more your anxiety will hit you...REMEMBER: We are all in this together - but some are more affected than others.

Ryan spoke to Emma who texted in to say she doesn't want to smile - but it's not because of the stupid recession - it's because she got braces on her teeth yesterday and they're really sore! And she thinks she looks like a right eejit...but they'll be off in time for her wedding so it'll be all well worth it - and to make her smile, Ryan is sending her on a weekend break to Kinsale!

Sky News' Enda Brady gives Ryan an update on how the media around the world are reporting on Ireland's predicament.

The Irish Hospice Foundation has launched Ireland's first National Thank You Day today - the same day as the US Thanksgiving holiday. The IHF have produced 'The Thank You Book' - a gratitude journal featuring messages of thanks from a wide range of personalities including Martin Sheen, Gabriel Byrne, Seamus Heaney, Brendan Gleeson and Maeve Binchy. Ryan talks to Maeve who is going to the Irish Book Awards tonight where she'll receive the Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award in Irish Literature from President Mary McAleese. 'The Thank You Book' is in aid of the Irish Hospice Foundation and is available from bookshops nationwide and online at www.thankyouproject.ie

Ryan talks to Sarah Kate Daly who is a Transition Year student in Presentation Secondary, Tralee. All pupils, staff and parents are getting involved in the Toys For Tubs appeal - and we salute them!

Ryan's desk has been buried by ghastly Christmas jumpers the past few weeks - he's tried all of them on - and is still deciding on which gay apparel he will don this Friday on The Late Late Toy Show. Three Irish companies have their elves working extra hard this year, darning, knitting and stitching the most eye-catching creations to bring Yuletide cheer! Ryan chats to Fabio Molle from Funky Christmas Jumpers (www.funkychristmasjumpers.com); Paddy O'Dea from Gammy Christmas Jumpers (http://www.gammychristmasjumpers.com) and Ross Culleton from Christmas Jumper Shop (http://www.christmasjumpershop.com/shop/) about their jolly jumpers and why they're the best choice for the Toy Show!

Ryan xmas 1.jpg Ryan xmas 2.jpg

Nessa contacted the programme to say she is putting up a sign on her door banning canvassers - in case any politician has the cheek to knock her door!

Niamh texted the show yesterday after hearing 11 year old Oisin and his mother Ann-Marie (who has MS) talking to Ryan about young carers. Niamh has MS and has two small kids herself. She's worried about the future. Her symptoms are not bad now but possibly will deteriorate. Niamh was diagnosed at 17 years of age - she's now 34.

With the Royal Engagement taking up column inches, we hear that Kate Middleton's parents are to help foot the bill for the multi million pound wedding next April. Do the parents of the bride really pay for the wedding or is that a tradition long gone? Olivia phoned in to say that she thinks if parents paid for the wedding dress - that's enough. To expect more is selfish. The day of parents paying is long gone. Olivia got married in 2004 and her parents helped but she didn't expect them to pay! She and her now hubby paid most of the expense themselves but family members were brilliant and helped out in other ways - her sister paid for half the wedding album, her mother in law made the cake and her brother donated and drove the wedding car.

It's a little bit of plastic that can be a life saver - concert tickets, holiday flights, Christmas jumpers! Your credit card can be great for special treats but what happens when you start to use it to pay off your day to day living expenses? E50 here, or E100 there and then little by little it gets bigger and then all of a sudden, you're in trouble...serious trouble. Well Eddie Hobbs has some advice, be it big or small debt.

Ryan has a few Christmas jumpers to giveaway - cue hundreds of pleas! Callers, texters and emailers are dying to get their mitts on some knits! Amy's dad Gerry is celebrating his birthday tomorrow and he's a 'jumper man', but he always wears trendy ones -she thinks it would be fun to take him down a peg or two with a gammy jumper, mwah ha ha! Peter the school bus driver wants a jumper to give the kids a good laugh - he's a bit of a (terrible) joker and he knows they'd love him to pick them up in a dodgy Christmas jumper! Ita is getting married in three weeks and she promised us she'd wear a cringey Christmas jumper over her dress for some of her wedding photos and send them on to us! How could we refuse?! Christmas jumpers for all!

Ryan spoke to Paul Gogarty TD this morning. Alongside Paul, (his daughter Daisy) and eight members of the Green Party yesterday, John Gormley said the past week was traumatic for the Irish people, claiming they felt misled and betrayed. Ireland is to hold a general election within two months after the Green Party stunned its government partners by issuing a new year deadline for the vote. Paul answers the questions the country want to hear.

When times are hard, troubled citizens turn to the arts, theatre, film and music. So this morning Nob Nation is proud to present 'IMF: The Musical'.

There is a one hour documentary on RTE One tonight about the reality of what life is like when a child takes on the role of caring for a parent. Children In Charge: Ireland's Young Carers shows us that all over the country there are children taking on responsibilities beyond their years as they care for an ill family member. 11 year old Oisin Wallace and his mum Anne-Marie Mulhall-Wallace are just two of the people featured in the documentary. They join Ryan in studio this morning to talk about their lives.

Children In Charge: Ireland's Young Carers, RTE One, Tuesday 23rd November, 10.30pm.

Ryan checks in with Shay Byrne to see how the Toys For Tubs appeal is coming along. Tubridy will be live from Castlebar next Monday 29th November and Athlone on Tuesday 30th November - come say hello!

Ryan chats to Rory O'Connor, CEO and founder of Scurri Web Services. He opened his new business venture today - it's an affordable shipping auction site, where customers can post a delivery for free, and transport providers bid for the job. For more info visit www.scurri.com.

Claire called in with some good news for us on this otherwise mournful Monday! Last night, she brought her beautiful new baby boy Jack home from hospital. Jack is her first child and she says that life can't possibly get much better than this! Congratulations Claire!

Katie got in touch to say that her 9 year old son is very upset by all the weeks' bad news. He wrote to Santa to say that he has a loving family and everything he needs and to give his present to another child who needs it more. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaw! How lovely! We're sure Santa will not forget his selfless generosity and leave him a little something to open on Christmas morning.

On a wet Sunday evening, Ireland took the historic step of accepting outisde help to save the country from bankruptcy. The morning Nob Nation looks to the past, the present and the future of this great little nation.

Yvonne's good news story began 11 years ago - when she met her boyfriend - but yesterday, their love story truly blossomed - they got engaged! Their two little girls were with them in Dublin to help choose the ring. As they looked dreamily into a Christmassy shop window, snowflakes fluttered down on top of them - talk about fairytale (granted, the snow was from a machine, but still!). It was a magical day for them which they'll always remember. Congratulations guys!

You wouldn't believe what birthday Senator Feargal Quinn is celebrating this week, but it's Superquinn's 50th Anniversary. Feargal always aimed to open his stores around his birthday - out of his first 18 shops, 11 were opened on his birthday. Feargal helped turn around the fortunes of various businesses in his RTE TV series 'Retail Therapy', including a mini supermarket in Cobh, a florist in the Liberties, a party shop in Finglas, a department store in Athlone and in Claremorris and a shop in Swords. Feargal has just finished filming a new series which will air in the new year. Feargal joins Ryan in studio this morning.

Ryan spoke to Michael who launched a business today. It's called Appliance Repair. They are a domestic appliance repair referral service. They also offer their engineers and members a discount scheme which cuts their costs on overheads on phones and insurance - similar to the VHI scheme. For more info, visit www.appliancerepair.ie

Aoife and her husband have just finished packing 8000 mouse traps to earn extra money for their daughter's birthday. Layla will be 3 on Sunday and is having a party - she's very excited! Aoife felt embarrassed at the start but now she just feels proud of themselves for doing it for their daughter - she deserves it! Happy Birthday Layla, from Ryan and all the team!

Margaret and her sister joined forces to start a new business venture as a result of being left absolutely penniless literally overnight as a result of the recession. Looking out her kitchen window one dreary morning in February last year, a flower pot at the end of her garden caught her eye. She brought in the pot, cleaned it up and painted it red. It really cheered her up. She then painted a flower on it and put it on her kitchen windowsill. Her friend saw it one day and asked her to do one for her. That was the start of a great business called ChristinaMaria Pots. They're in business 6 months now and are just starting to make a profit. There are loads of craft fairs coming up from now until Christmas and they're kept busy! Check out Margaret's pots on www.christinamariapots.com

Callers and texters hounded us this morning to play the clip from last night's Prime Time, where Labour's Pat Rabbitte accused the government of destroying the economy and of engaging in lies over the weekend. As if we'd ever say no to our listeners...

Emma is a psychotherapist called into the show to tell anyone who is in distress, for whatever reason, that there is help out there.  The St. Vincent de Paul are there for help with practical things, but there is emotional support at every level. If you Google low cost counselling, anxiety support, help for depression etc you will find help that is confidential and safe. The suicide rate is rocketing here, but suicide is not the answer. Ask for help, talk to someone, we can get through this dark time if we support each other.

Ruth is a mother and a grandmother. She says we're all in the now - we have to get on with our lives. A bomb's not going to fall out of the sky - Life is life - you have to live it. You can only make yourself happy. If you have your health, it's much more important than anything else.

Ryan spoke to Kevin Gardiner, Head of Investment Strategy at Barclays Wealth, who coined the phrase Celtic Tiger in 1994. He wrote it in a report on markets when he was working for Morgan Stanley. Although it was a very short report, it made a huge impact on popular imagination. Kevin apologised for cultural vandalism!

Following last night's announcement that Ireland finally needs help, Funny Friday has been cancelled on Nob Nation's Liveline and instead Joe brings us Freaky Freitag!

Former Miss Ireland, model, journalist, TV presenter, party-girl, best-selling author and mum of two Amanda Brunker joins Ryan in studio to discuss, amongst other things, her new book 'Christmas with Amanda Brunker - Recipes and Tips for the Perfect Christmas'.

Ryan checks in with Shay Byrne who is in Athlone Town Centre looking for a 'pop-up shop' for Tuesday week's Outside Broadcast on 30th November 2010.

Joe emailed us to say that the smallest snug in Ireland is in his back garden in Bray. Four people can fit in it. The wallpaper on the ceiling goes back to the 1970s...

One of our Toys For Tubs ambassadors, Dolores Keaveney is the station manager in Claremorris and she helped get the campaign up and running alongside Iarnrod Eireann. She tells Ryan about the generosity of locals who are donating huge amounts to toys to the Toys For Tubs campaign!

Sue Lamon-Diver from SuperValu, Yvonne Costello from Expert Ireland, David Hickey from Self Storage Ireland and Barry Kenny from Iarnrod Eireann give Ryan an update on the Toys For Tubs appeal and how people can help out and donate toys. For all info, click here!

Diarmuid Ferriter, Professor of Modern Irish History at UCD and former minister, discusses Ireland's economic recovery and the arrival of the IMF.

Ryan spoke to Gerry, a proud father of two children. He's proud to be Irish. But he says we need leadership at the moment. We don't have leaders.

Maura called in to say how much the clip of newsreader Emma's giggling children cheered her up this morning! She was on the bus on her way to work and was getting funny looks because she wasn't just smiling, she was having a proper belly laugh out loud. She says their little laughs would brighten your darkest day - and indeed today is one of those days, economically.

The eyes of Europe are on Ireland this week as we resist the biggest bail out of our history. Nob Nation previews the new disaster movie on the lifetime of Fianna Fail.

Brenda called in with some good news! Her sister Shella gave birth to a little girl Ellie on Sunday. She came nine weeks early and weighs just over two pounds. She is a little fighter and thank God she is doing well now but Brenda says that little Ellie has thought her and all the family that there are far more important things in life than anything that will happen with the IMF today. As long as your loved ones are healthy you will be ok.

Tommy Tiernan kicked off his 'Crooked Man' tour in Vicar Street last night. He joins Ryan in studio this morning to talk about the show which is in tune with his deepest, darkest and embarrassing thoughts and the perils of turning 40.

Today, the nation grieves as the story of two tragedies unfurls. Post mortem examinations on the bodies of John Butler and his two daughters are due to resume this morning at Cork University Hospital. The children died at their Ballycotton home in Co. Cork yesterday before their father, John, who had been treated for depression, died when his car crashed and burst into flames. It is believed the children, seven-year-old Zoe and two-year-old Ella, had been strangled. Gardaí are attempting to piece together the events in the days and hours leading up to the deaths and have appealed for the public's assistance. The children's mother, Una Butler, is being comforted by family in east Cork. Ryan speaks to Cork Labour Councillor John Mulvihill who trained John Butler as a young GAA player.

The house at Hazel Grove in Newcastle West, Co Limerick, in which the bodies of four people were found yesterday remains sealed off today. A Garda Technical Team has been working there since early morning, searching for clues and evidence which might give a clearer picture about how the appalling crime happened. Prayers were said at church in Newcastle West this morning for the four victims; two women aged 21 and 25, and two young children, a three year old boy and a five month old baby girl. A 31-year-old man arrested yesterday is still being detained by gardaí in Limerick. He is being questioned on suspicion of having carried out the murders. Local priest Fr. Frank Duhig of Newcastle spoke to Ryan about the tragic loss.

Royal Family Correspondent Jennie Bond chats to Ryan about Prince William and Kate Middleton's Royal engagement.

-Prince-William-and-Kate--006.jpg

Psychoanalyst Ray O'Neill talks about the mistakes people make and how they learn from them and why we should embrace making mistakes. Callers talk about the best mistakes they ever made. Yvonne Conway missed her bus and had to hitch a lift to the airport. She'd always been warned about the dangers of hitching but she was desperate. The person who picked her up is now her husband.

A while back on the show we were chatting to meteorologist Evelyn Cusack and she mentioned, nay demanded, that we talk to the man she said was educating the masses on the Wonders of the Solar System in his programme of the same name on BBC2. So never one to disobey Evelyn, we thought we'd give him a buzz! Professor Brian Cox, particle physicist, a Royal Research fellow, Professor at the University of Manchester and a researcher at the ATLAS experiment on the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland (oh and one time popstar!) tells Ryan how he's attempting to make science 'cool'...Brian has a new book out based on the TV series called 'Wonders of the Solar System' and is published by Collins.

On today's show Ryan spoke to ultimate Corkman Sean Og O hAilpín about work, his retirement from Inter County hurling and what he's up to now.

Conor Brophy from the RTE Business team spoke about the Senior European Central Bank officials ongoing talks between the EU and Dublin.  John told Ryan he was listening to BBC Radio 4 this morning with presenter John Humphreys discussing the economic crisis and he did not like how Ireland was portrayed. So he lifted the phone and put a call into BBC to make a complaint. John himself is on E19.50 a week from the social welfare. He would love to be working but he can't get a job.

Ryan show reporter Dave Sherry visited Fota Wildlife Park in Cork to visit "Holly The Wallaby" and updated us on how she was getting on with all the visitors to the park.

Shay Byrne was working hard at The Toys for Tubs pop-up shop on Opera Lane in Cork.  There was no sign of recession and tightened purse stings as people came out in force to donate toys and gifts as part of the Toys for Tubs drive from Ben 10 to Barbies and vouchers to video games plus loads more exciting popular toys.

Ryan spoke to Breda O'Sullivan who is the Kilorglan RFC Ambassador. Elaoise Smyth is our UCC ambassador and she is 2nd year in UCC studying Spanish and History. Elaoise was on Campus Radio yesterday talking about the Toy Collection she is organising.

And Mairead Bushnell National President of The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Cork, encouraged people to contact their local SVP office this Christmas if they need a helping hand..

Ryan spoke to Fine Gael transport spokesman Simon Coveney, who vows not to accept a state car if he becomes a minister after the next general election. Simon is the party's most senior-ranking frontbench member in Cork and is widely expected to be appointed to cabinet in a Fine Gael coalition.  Fine Gael is promising to halve the spending on ministerial cars and introduce a pool of drivers for ministers to use. Mr. Coveney also dismissed suggestions from Fine Gael supporters that it was not the time to run the country and Fianna Fail should be left to "clean up their own mess".

Shay Byrne is at our Tubridy 'Pop-Up Shop' in Opera Lane, Cork where the people of the People's Republic are stopping by to donate a toy to the Toys For Tubs appeal!

Chief Executive of the FAI John Delaney tells Ryan about how the FAI are expanding a programme called Late Night League in Dublin today. The league is run by the FAI in conjunction with city and county councils in Dublin and has been running in Dublin since 2008 but is growing. 1,050 young people participated in the first half of this year.

Ryan was joined in the Cork studio by Martina Horgan who tried for ten long years to have a child both naturally and also by IVF. Eventually she and her husband decided to adopt Leah from China years ago. Although her journey was very difficult, in the end it was successful. This week the Irish Examiner will distribute a free booklet entitled "Let's Talk Infertility" compiled for couples considering fertility treatment and containing information on each of the fertility clinics, treatment option available, costs and success rates.

Ryan spoke to Sue Lamon-Diver, Head of Communications for SuperValu, who is delighted to announce that their stores are 100% on board for the Toys For Tubs appeal. Each of their 191 retail stores will be a drop off centre for the toys. For a list of SuperValu's nationwide stores, click here.

Toys For Tubs - Count Me In!

You People! The kindness and generosity of the nation has warmed our hearts. We've been flooded with calls, texts, emails, Tweets and Facebook messages - all offering to help the children around the country who will be in need this Christmas. We're working with our friends in St. Vincent de Paul to make sure that no child is without a toy this Christmas morning.

If you'd like to donate a toy and find out how you can help click here!

For one week only, Dublin Zoo is offering free free entry to all red haired children and any child who arrives at the Zoo dressed as an Orangutan - this is to promtoe awareness surrounding the endangered orangutans in the wild! Ryan chats to Shirley who loves being a red head but when she was young she really didn't! Name calling was every day, from Foxy to Fanta Head to Carrot Top. Only when she went to America in the 90's did she learn to love it!

red heads.jpg

On the back of the Price Waterhouse Cooper scandal during the week, where male members of staff circulated emails ranking the attractiveness of new female colleagues, journalist Niamh Lyons wrote an article in the Daily Mail about a former colleague who made a list of the Top 5 office hotties on the back of a napkin at a work do. Niamh ranked number 4. She found that it was those who didn't make the Top 5 who were most annoyed. She was secretely delighted that she made the shortlist. She thinks women are just as guilty of judging men but that they have the good sense to do it in private!

Every household has some Tat in the Attic! And now's the best time for the best value in the antiques trade in Ireland - everyone is wishing for a windfall. Antique dealer Niall Mullen joins Ryan and Dave Sherry in studio to value the tat Team Tubridy brought in! From signed books to cracked vases, silver platters to old coins, Niall gives his expert opinion on whether any of it is worth a shilling! If you have anything you'd like valued, the Antiques Roadshow is visiting University Concert Hall in Limerick this Sunday 14th November from 11am - 4pm. Admission is 10 euro which covers the valuation of 3 items.

Shay Byrne updates listeners on our Toys For Tubs appeal and how they can get involved to make sure that no child is without a toy this Christmas morning. For all the info, click here!

Terri called in to thank St. Vincent de Paul who helped her greatly over the last 18 months when she was at rock bottom. She so respected how SVP treated her and her family with such dignity in the depths of her despair. Terri has since returned to work and she's looking forward to Christmas with her husband and three children.

COME TOGETHER!

Toys For Tubs is underway! All you lovely people from all over the nation are really getting involved - we love it when a plan comes together!

Friends, you who have sent emails, called, texted, Tweeted, Facebooked - HUGE thanks! We are in the midst of coordinating this mammoth operation and will have more details on how you can help very soon - tune into 2fm from 9am - 11am this week!

Louise texted the show on her way from Abbeyleix to Swords for a job interview. She was very nervous but ready for the challenge! Callers offered her some advice on how to nail the gig and we all wish her the BEST of luck - we'll check in with her later to see how she got on...

We received an email from a listener who has made the decision, along with her husband, not to have children. She has nieces and nephews and loves them to bits but it was a decision they made together. She says she's been called selfish for this and when she went to her GP, a few weeks ago for the pill, he said he wanted to speak to her husband about this and even suggested counselling for them. Her husband was upset by this and she just wanted to know how our listeners felt about this...

Martin called in to say his wife has had 2 miscarriages - but she's now 16 weeks pregnant and she's so excited. Martin says there are so many women out there who would love to have children but who have miscarried. People should be sensitive to this.

Foreign gentlemen roaming around government buildings like they own their place. An EU Commissioner welcomed in Dublin like a liberator. This morning on Nob Nation, Vincent Browne asks who is really running the country?

The West End's favourite musical comedy, Hairspray, is coming to Dublin! Ryan talks to the star of the show, Michael Ball. Hairspray opens at the Grand Canal Theatre, Dublin next Tuesday 16th - 27th November 2010 .

Last night Prince Charles visited the Irish Embassy in London, the first time a member of Britain's Royal Family has visited the Embassy.  The British Prince was joined by the Duchess of Cornwall, and met the Irish Ambassador Bobby McDonagh and dressmaker Paul Costelloe. Paul tells Ryan all about the evening, in particular his encounter with Camilla Parker Bowles.

Paul Costelloe.jpg

Ryan is joined in studio by former Leinster and Irish hooker Bernard Jackman, who has experienced the highs of professional rugby by winning the Heineken Cup and a Grand Slam medal. But along with the highs, he has experienced the many lows facing professional players in the modern game which he has written about it in his new autobiography 'Blue Book - The Inside Story of Leinster in the Cheika Years'. Bernard is now Director of Rugby in Clontarf and also coaches there. He has been accepted into a Masters in Sports and Exercise Management in UCD.

COME TOGETHER! Toys For Tubs is underway! All you lovely people from all over the nation are really getting involved - we love it when a plan comes together! Tracy Ennis Faherty is a barrister in the Law Library and would be delighted to get involved with the Toys For Tubs appeal! YAY!

Friends, you who have sent emails, called, texted, Tweeted, Facebooked - HUGE thanks! We are in the midst of coordinating this mammoth operation and will have more details on how you can help very soon - tune into 2fm from 9am - 11am this week!

barbie.jpgDave Sherry popped into Hamleys in Dundrum yesterday and picked up a couple of presies for the Toys For Tubs appeal - Barbie and Ken from Toy Story 3 for a girl and an army tank with sound effects for a boy!

And then there were nine. It's another week of rows, controversy and mayhem in the X-Factor house. Nob Nation has the latest in Simon and Louis' domestic soap opera....

Connor McKeown & The Legends of Swing dropped into Studio 1 to give us a big, bold, brassy, belting version of Michael Jackson's Thriller!

Thumbnail image for norah.jpg

Ryan is joined in studio by magazine mogul Norah Casey (Irish Tatler, Women's Way) who is the new Dragon on the Third Season of Dragon's Den. For your chance to enter the Den and see if your idea is good enough for a Dragon's investment, click on http://www.rte.ie/tv/dragonsden/dragonsdenapplication2010.rtf

Ryan spoke to Andrew who is looking at moving back to Ireland after living in London for the last 11 years, but every Irish person he speaks to is telling him he has to be mad, and when he listens to the radio, most news is bad news. He asks Ryan and other listeners to give him some good reasons to move back as he really wants to and is looking forward to it, but the comments he's getting at the moment are so negative.

Doreen moved back to Ireland 2 years ago after living in Switzerland for 14 years. Her husband is Swiss and they moved just as the recession hit. She says it's hard when you constantly hear how bad it is here and how good it is in Switzerland. But she's glad to be back despite the doom and gloom. It's tough here at the moment but being away from your family and culture is tougher no matter how much you are earning. Doreen's mother is very ill at the moment and it would've killed her to be away from home now. Ireland will bounce back - we've been through worse.

Tubridy Monday

On the back of Friday's 'Toys For Tubs' appeal, we have been inundated with generous offers from all over the country - you're all Counted In! Our Toy Ambassadors will be assigned and then it's full speed ahead! Tune in to Tubridy this week from 9am - 11am to see how YOU can help!

Ian Bolton got in touch offering his time and service for the Toys For Tubs appeal. Ian has a garment printing company specialising in t-shirt design, silkscreen printing and embroidery. He's offering to supply branded jackets for Toys For Tubs appeal! Huzzah!

We were all horrified to see the 33 whales washed up on Rutland Island over the weekend. The 20ft pilot whales had been swimming off the coast of Donegal for the past week before being found on Saturday. Patricia called in to say she was watching a programme last night on Sky about whales...she explains if one whale is sick they swim to shore together.

Ryan spoke to Rhona whose mother has dementia and believes in euthanasia. Rhona's mother has been in a vegetative state for 4 years.

It's hard to imagine, but orangutans may have less than 10 years left in the wild before they are extinct. They will be the first great ape to go extinct. Dublin Zookeeper Gerry Creighton tells Ryan about Orangutan Awareness Week.

orangutan.jpg

Donal MacIntyre joins Ryan in studio this morning to tell his side of the story and more from his new book 'Hitmen, Gangsters, Cannibals and Me'. In his book, Donal opens up his reporter's notebook for the first time to reveal the compelling story of the man behind the stories. In this candid and revealing memoir, we are given a fascinating and hilarious insight into what it means to truly live a live without limits.

Donal_McIntyre.jpg

Shay Byrne talks about our Culture Club selection for November - Never Let Me Go. The movie will be out in January, but let's all read the book first! Also, if you're a bit of a Culture Vulture, email your review of the book to tubs@rte.ie.

You can also donate your euro at any Post Office or Topaz Station. A special "Euro for Zero" collection will take place onboard all Aer Lingus flights over the next two weeks also.

E3000 CASH  WEEKEND COMPETITION:  November 5th 2010

Today on the show, we gave you the chance to win E3000 in cash.Congratulations to Edwina White from Wexford who scooped the prize!

Met Eireann's Evelyn Cusack warns Ryan that Ireland should brace itself for flooding and gales this weekend as Hurricane Tomas heads for our coastline late Sunday and Monday. With winds of up to 100km/h expected and heavy rainfall, there are also warnings of floods in Galway. In Dublin, the city council has begun shoring up temporary flood defences in preparation for the storm. You've Been Warned!

Maureen sent us a text to say that she has no children but that she is lucky to be able to afford to buy a child's Christmas present for a less fortunate family. But she's not sure how to go about donating her gift...Ryan is inspired to start the 2010 Toys For Tubs Appeal - if you're thinking 'Count Me In!' then get in touch! Email tubs@rte.ie to get involved in making Christmas that little bit easier for those hit by these hard times.

Toys.jpg

Maria got in touch to say that she fell on hard times 2 years ago and she only got through Christmas with the help of social workers and donations - she urges people in a similar predicament this year not to be embarrassed to ask for help.

And so it begins...Toys For Tubs 2010 is really gathering momentum! Phonelines are hopping, our Inbox is overflowing - people of Ireland, your generosity is overwhelming. People are offering their time, services, toys - and we're going nationwide! Warehouses all over the country will be bursting with toys by Christmas. And it's all because of YOU.

Bernard Dunne2.jpg

Bernard Dunne pops into studio to talk about his new autobiography which tells the full story of his life and astounding boxing career. Bernard Dunne's 'My Story' is published by Penguin Ireland and if you'd like to meet Bernard, he will be signing copies of his book on Saturday 6th November in Easons, Liffey Valley Shopping Centre at 12 midday and Sunday 7th November in Easons, O'Connell Street, Limerick at 1pm.

Michael Corcoran joins Ryan to talk about Ireland v South Africa - the first Rugby International at the Aviva Stadium. It's the first game of the season for our team.  The World Cup takes place in New Zealand in 2011

And again, a huge thanks to you all for calling, texting, emailing, Tweeting and Facebooking with your generous offers of toys, time and talents! It's gonna be a busy few weeks and we need all the help we can get! (And, remember, there's only 50 more sleeps till C*****mas!).

Professor Terry Pratchett has been added to the academic staff of Trinity College. Terry's first lecture will take place this evening at 7 pm and has been entitled 'The importance of being absolutely amazed about everything'.  Terry was awarded a knighthood in 2009, Terry has had his books translated into 38 languages and sold over 70 million copies. Terry spoke openly about the difficulties he's faced after being diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease, making his diagnosis public in December 2007. He has made substantial donations to Alzheimer charities, a BBC documentary about his condition and given a televised lecture on the subject.

Ryan read an email from Mary who was wondering if it was possible to fall in love with your best friend when you do everything together? Valerie was listening and she   told Ryan nearly twenty years ago she realised she was hopelessly in love with her best friend. She suffered in silence for three years when finally she had to take the risk of losing his friendship by telling him how she felt. Thankfully he had been feeling the same and hadn't the courage to tell her.  Valerie recently celebrated twelve years of marriage and are expecting their third child.

Karen told her story about her best friend who was her fiancee for 10 years before they got together. They did everything together once before but they broke it off but they just could not stay apart. Karen is getting married next July and her fiancee is the best thing that ever happened to her.  Karen's advice for Mary if things don't go well, it is worth taking the chance.

Cian O'Daly, father of Baby Henry chats to Ryan about Henry's first birthday celebrations. Henry had a very important check up with his cardiologist yesterday in Crumlin. They did an echo scan of the heart and lung arteries and she said that she couldn't be happier with his progress. Hopefully no more surgeries or interventions until the next stage of his staged repair when Henry will be three years old.

The battle of the sexes has claimed a new casualty. Actor Stephen Fry was drawn into the fray over a magazine interview in which he was quoted as saying that women only had sex to ensure they kept hold of their relationship.  Fry has since claimed he was misquoted and that the "humorous" tone of the article was missed. His remarks, accurate or not, were all the tinder needed to reignite the debate about what women and men want -- and who wants it more. There seems little doubt that women are traditionally thought to be less interested in sex than men. Ryan talks to Susan Daly who rubbishes Fry's assertion that women merely use sex as a relationship bargaining tool.

Ryan is joined in studio by teacher and former GAA All-Ireland winning captain Ray Silke. In late August, Ray joined the growing ranks of SAHDs -"Stay At Home Dads" -  and took eight weeks un-paid parental leave, to mind his identical twin boys, Oisin and Fiach (10  months), and two daughters Neasa (4) and  Fainse (7). Ray discusses why he went on parental leave and the high and low points.

Adrian called in to share his experience as a Stay At Home Dad. He has three kids under the age of 4 and he works from home.

Simon says you need a strong family network and lots of luck to make being a Stay At home Dad a happy and successful experience. He found it hard to bond with the mums at the school gate in the beginning but his lucky break came when he met the mother of a schoolfriend of his daughter. After a year of proving that men can be trusted as friends with a woman, he can report that they all are good friends now. He says his kids are really secure and flexible in their thinking and believes they are free from the stereotype of men. He definitely is in awe at what his wife had done for so long.

An Inconvenient Truth - this morning on Nob Nation, the twins give us the latest life lessons on 'Jeducation'....

Maria called into the show to say she had to perform the Heimlich Manoeuvre on her 13 year old daughter about 4 weeks ago. They were watching X-Factor having their dinner in the sitting room. She turned blue choking on her steak. Maria froze but then she just grabbed her and was determined to release the piece of rogue meat It was terribly frightening watching her choke but tremendous relief when the huge piece of steak popped out - Maria only knew how to do it from watching medical dramas on TV!

Siobhan is a paediatric first aid instructor and offered advice to our listeners on how to deliver the abdominal thrusts / Heimlick Maneouver when someone is choking.

Just last night, Gillian's 3 year old son started choking on a crusty bit of lasagne - to say she nearly lost her nerve is an understatement. Thankfully he got the food out and he was fine.

Naoise Nunn joins Ryan in studio and asks listeners to help design their ideal leader, combining the best attributes of the best leaders of all time. The charisma of Clinton? The backbone of Thatcher? The dignity of Mandela? The voice of Kennedy? The smile of Blair? You choose!

Geraldine's daughter Katie is 12 years old and was born with Down Syndrome. Katie was born 6 weeks premature and weighed only 3lbs. She had 3 large holes in her heart and spent the first year in Crumlin. Katie spent 5 months connected to a ventilator. She's in 6th class in mainstream school and winning awards in the HB Down Syndrome Awards. Geraldine wants people to know that having a child with Down Syndrome is not the end of the world. (Geraldine mentioned that Katie loves playing with Rory's Story Cubes, a great word game that stimulates the imagination and vocabulary. For more info visit www.storycubes.com)

Audrey is a great inspiration. Her second grandson David was born 9 weeks ago. Her daughter is 25 and little David is doing very well.

Brigette's son Mark also has Down Syndrome - he's 4 and half. Mark is a twin. Brigette has 6 children, the oldest is 15. Mark and his twin brother go to playschool together.

Ryan read out an email sent into the programme from a woman addicted to contacting mediums by phone, text, email, interactive TV. Sometimes these calls cost up to E60 - E100 euro a week. She hates to admit it, but she knows she has a problem. She's an educated woman with a Diploma in Special Needs Childcare and she attends counselling every week and is generally in control of her life - although she's very insecure of her love life. This is where the psychics step in - the conflicting readings from different psychics confuse her more and although she's aware that they are confusing and frustrating her, she's obsessed. She knows there must be others out there struggling in a similar way. She needs to sort it out as her phone bills are huge - she doesn't need a psychic to see that one coming...

Dolores called into the show after hearing the email - she's a professional woman who spent over 8 months after her marriage broke down 8 years ago contacting mediums, and texting also at €2 a pop. She got conflicting answers and was even more confused than she was originally. She then realised that only she could make up her mind about her relationships or lack of and stopped cold turkey. She found it hard but kept telling herself that it was a money-making racket and they would always leave you hanging with the answers so you would text again. She was embarrassed to admit she had fallen into the trap but it was because of her vulnerability. Her friend still contacts these people but Dolores won't get involved again. But that emailer is not alone. She is not stupid, just weak. She can get out of it but she has to be strong. Like any other addiction you have to cut the ties and work at it. Every time she feels like texting just think of all the money she will save or get a suitable mantra that will help her personally.

We got our jazz hands out in support of those who are involved in musical societies! Ryan is joined by veteran jazz-handers Shay Byrne and Aislinn Ni Ullachain. Aislinn is involved in the Portmarnock Musical Society and currently filming The Tudors. Portmarnock are staging Jesus Christ Superstar in the spring and are desperate for men! The ideal candidate will preferably like music, have a good sense of humour and in general be up for a laugh. Roll up, roll up young men of Ireland - there's no business like show business!

26 year old Noel called in - he's been involved in musical societies for years. He agrees that it's hard to get young males on the stage. Noel has appeared in Jesus Christ Superstar, Oliver and his latest musical is Me & My Girl with the Slievenamon Musical Society. He says it's a great spot for meeting girls - he's married now but the first time he kissed his wife was after impressing her during his stint as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar!

Tubridy Monday

roger.jpgThe name's Moore, Sir Roger Moore - and he spoke to Ryan this morning from his home in Monaco. The popular British actor, perhaps best known for his role as secret agent 007 in the James Bond movie series, explained his involvement with UNICEF - he was always fascinated by the work his great friend Audrey Hepburn did all over the world for UNICEF.

Sir Roger is promoting the UNICEF "Euro for Zero" campaign which is running from the 24th of October until the 6th November with the goal to raise over E1,000,000 in just two weeks, simply by getting every adult in Ireland to donate E1 each for UNICEF Ireland's "Believe in Zero" campaign.

A Euro might not seem like much, but give one to UNICEF today and it can save a child's life.

To support the campaign simply text EURO to 57501 [text costs E1 and 90 cent from each text goes to UNICEF]. For more info visit www.unicef.ie

You can also donate your Euro at any Post Office or Topaz Station. A special "Euro for Zero" collection will take place onboard all Aer Lingus flights over the next two weeks also.

Ryan spoke to Brendan Ring, founder of the Cliona Ring Foundation, named after his daughter Cliona who lost her very bravely fought battle against illness in December 2006. Cliona was loved and admired by all her family, friends, and neighbours and the wider community for the courage and good humour with which she faced her illness and its treatment.

The Cliona Ring Foundation is a charitable organisation founded in 2007 to fill a great need: providing financial assistance to families from Ireland who have children undergoing long-term medical treatment for serious illness. Funds raised are not be used to pay for the child's actual medical care; rather, donations are made to families for other "hidden" costs, including hotels, restaurants, petrol and other miscellaneous expenses incurred by families who must take sick children to hospitals or other medical facilities for frequent treatments.

The foundation raises funds and disperses financial support to families from Ireland who have children diagnosed with serious illness. Specifically, the funds are to be used to defray travel, lodging, food and miscellaneous expenses associated with visits to hospitals or other treatment facilities. For more details visit www.clionaringfoundation.com

We heard from many texters and callers about the expense of visiting family members and loved ones in hospitals. Siobhan's sister is terminally ill in Beaumont hospital. Herself and her other sister take it in turns to visit her.  The car park costs E8.65 each time and she also uses the M50 so she has to pay the toll. She spends over E50.00 a week to visit her sister three times a week.

Orla's dad has just come out of hospital after being in there for 6 weeks. Herself and her sister visited the hospital every day. The car park was E2 .50 for an hour and E4.80 for 2 hours. Then it would go up to E7.20. The first 20 minutes is free.

It being All Saint's Day and all, Fr. Michael Collins pops into studio to talk about the saints that stick in our memory - those who many of us pray to such as St. Anthony, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Patrick, Padre Pio, Maximilian Kolbe, Mother Teresa, St. Jude, the Child of Prague, St. Valentine, St. Bernadette and St. Nicholas of Myra...
