Tom Doorley joined us on Friday, July 16th to tell us of some of the great value in summer wines out there .
SEVEN VALUE SUMMER WINES
PALO ALTO ROSE (pink) Chile, 4.99 euro Dunnes Stores
Shocking pink, lovely fruit, nice dry finish. Essence of summer. Great aperitif and goes with just about anything.
TESCO FINEST GAVI (white) Italy, 5.99 Tesco
Great simple, straightforward fresh white wine. They drink oceans of this in NW Italy. Great with every kind of seafood or just as a palate opener.
CLOS MALVERNE SAUVIGNON BLANC (white) South Africa, 5.99 Dunnes Stores
Zingy, zesty white from the Cape that smells of blackcurrant leaves and green gooseberries. Astonishing value for money. The ideal match is fresh goat's cheese.
HOWCROFT ESTATE SHIRAZ (red) Australia, 6.99 Tesco
Oz red that does NOT taste of alcoholic fruit juice. Coolish climate fruit, smoky nose, plums, licquorice, complex. At this price?!! Wow! Needs grilled meat. Perfect for steak.
POINT WEST TOURIGA NACIONAL (red) Portugal, 8.99 SuperValu
Off-beat grape makes a very chunky red here with plenty of brambly fruit and some good grown-up tannin. Big mouthul. Ultimate barbecue stuff.
MITCHELTON BLACKWOOD PARK RIESLING (white), Australia, 9.99 Dunnes Stores
Riesling does brilliantly in Oz. This is bone dry, citrus-scented, lemony, really refreshing. Just right with Thai flavours.
MARKS & SPENCER CORBIERES (red), France, 9.99 Marks & Spencer
Syrah and Grenace from warm south of France, simply packed with fruit, masses of sheer flavour for the price. Can take spice, lovely with lamb.
WINE AND FOOD
BLUE CHEESE is much, much nicer with a sweet white wine.
TAPAS: covers a multitude so do what the Spanish do: drink a bone dry fino Sherry like Tio Pepe (widely available, about 14-15 euro)
LAMB: Red Burgundy is made for lamb. If you're feeling flusg try: Marks & Spencer Saint-Aubin Rouge (22.50) France
CURRY: don't bother with wine unless it's very mild and creamy, in which case an Oz red with a spicy character will work well (e.g. Howcroft Shiraz at 6,99 from Tesco). If it's hot, stick with beer.
THAI FLAVOURS: If it's really hot it will kill wines stone dead. If medium, the lime and ginger will go well with a Riesling (two examples already cited)
SPAGHETTI BOLOGNESE is trickier than you might imagine. A really good match is: Tesco Finest Barbera d'Asti (red) Tesco 7.35
OILY FISH like salmon or mackerel: Marks & Spencer Macon-Uchizy or any dry white with plenty of acidity. Think of lemon juice!
STEAK/ROAST BEEF: It really has to be red and fairly big. That covers an awful lot.
BACON AND CABBAGE: you need bottled Guinness or a slightly sweet German Riesling.
