Some confusion exists as to whether Mike Edgar or John Clarke was Radio Nova's first on-air employee; what is certain is the manner in which John applied for a job at the station by just walking up to the front door and being auditioned on-air by Chris Cary! The rest is history! John recalls: "According to Chris's web site, it was Mike, he was in the building, but I think when we went live it may have been me. Nova was testing locally across May of 1981. I dropped in on a Monday afternoon, did 2 to 6.30, while the equipment was being tested on local transmission. I believe this initial testing was a musical back drop for Chris and co to continue the building of the second studio which was to become a fully fitted production suite. As I was testing the sound desk, he popped his head into the studio after an hour and asked would I use the microphone and do a bit of jocking" "But I do remember Chris saying just before I left the building, "welcome to Radio Nova, I have found my breakfast show jock". Will you do it ?. Yes was my answer. He ushered me into the transmitter room. And explained the sequence for switching on the equipment. I said I would return early the following day to fully verse myself with this process. And I have a vague recollection that on the Thursday we began the exciting 'broadcast life' of Nova live to Dublin and beyond and I was the first voice when we cranked up the power". John spent five years with Nova, all of them in high profile daytime timeslots and many in partnership with Bob Gallico. After Nova John joined RTE and has been with 2FM ever since. He is now Controller of the station and broadcasts an oldies show every weekend.
