Monday 19th October 2009

On Monday's show, journalist Declan Cashin was in studio discussing fan films.

'The Hunt For Gollum'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H09xnhlCQU

'The Hunt For Gollum' is a 40-minute fan-film. Since its internet release in May 2009, Gollum, put together by a team of amateurs on a budget of just £3,000, has been seen by 3.5 million people. In May it was the fourth most watched release in the US in terms of viewing numbers. It was long, it had semi-professional acting and writing (direct to DVD standard) and, most impressively, had fantastic production values considering it was made for just £3,000. Fans donated 20 per cent of production costs through the website.

'Troops'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gc5IqD0QibY

Fan filmmakers generally give credit for the current interest in fan films to 'Troops', the well-received parody film that crossed 'Star Wars' with reality TV show 'Cops'. Produced in 1997, 'Troops' was distributed as large video files downloaded from websites.
What was striking about 'Troops' was the effects. Here was a film, produced on a home PC, that does a not-half-bad job of mimicking the kinds of million-dollar bells and whistles George Lucas brought to the screen in 'Star Wars'.

'Star Trek Phase II'
http://www.startreknewvoyages.com/

'Star Trek: Phase II' (2004) was named after an aborted 1970's ST episode, which picks up where Shatner's series left off. It largely looks and sounds like the 1960's series. It's basically how they imagine the show would have panned out had it not been cancelled. Each episode costs about $45,000 to make. They are constantly looking for money without making any.
It has since had over 30m downloads. Eugene Rodenberry Jr - son of ST creator Gene - loved it, and now acts as "consulting producer". Even actors from the original series appeared. Walter Koenig (Chekov), George Takei (Sulu) all appeared in episodes. In fact, Takei's episode, entitled 'World Enough and Time' was nominated for a Hugo (sci-fi Oscars) alongside Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who.

On Thursday's show, comedian John Donnellan was in our Galway studio discussing the most controversial comedy moments, as written about in this week's Hot Press magazine.
__________________________________

JERRY SPRINGER: THE OPERA

With its irreverent treatment of religion, the musical was picketed by Christian groups in the US and UK, and the BBC's TV screening in 2005 was one of the most controversial British television programmes ever.

MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN

The Monty Python team's story about a young man mistaken for the Messiah sparked accusations of blasphemy. It was banned in Ireland, and by towns in the UK that didn't even have cinemas!

LENNY BRUCE'S OBSCENITY TRIAL

Pioneering stand-up Lenny Bruce did two 1964 appearances in Greenwich Village that resulted in a  widely-publicised six-month obscenity trial that found him guilty.

BRAND AND ROSS PRANK CALLS ROW

Brand and Ross' pranks calls to former Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs (with explicit references to Brand having slept with Sachs' grand-daughter) eclipsed news of the global financial meltdown and the US Presidential election.

THE BRASS EYE SPECIAL

Satirist Chris Morris found himself at the centre of a furore after a 2001 broadcast tackling media treatment of paedophilia. He duped numerous celebrities (Gary Lineker, Phil Collins) into spouting nonsense on a topic about which they knew nothing.

BORAT

Sacha Baron Cohen's hit comedy controversially lampooned Kazakhstan and is banned in all Arab countries (except Lebanon). The character of Borat was denounced for being racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic. They didn't like it in Russia either.

BILL HICKS DROPPED FROM LETTERMAN

In 1993, Bill Hicks recorded a tv performance for David Letterman that was dropped due to Hicks' references to religion. Earlier this year, Letterman played the recording in full and apologised to Bill's Mom.

ANDREW DICE CLAY BANNED BY MTV

The homophobia and sexism in Dice Clay's sketches led to him being banned by MTV. When he hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live in 1990, the show was boycotted by Sinéad O'Connor.

DEREK AND CLIVE

AKA Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, the duo's outpourings on albums and a film, were riddled with profanities and vulgarity. Sample: Clive claimed that his worst job was retrieving lobsters from Jayne Mansfield's arsehole.

JERRY SADOWITZ

Magician-comic Jerry Sadowtiz was possibly the sickest puppy on the comedy block, focusing extensively on disasters and tragedies.  He also wore a giant phallus with which he sprayed the audience.
