ON DAN'S SHOW - FEBRUARY 13 TO 16 (10PM TO 1AM)

GIRL BAND IN THE 2FM STUDIO SESSION - MONDAY, FEB 13

Girl Band.jpg

Girl Band are a "New-ish Dublin-based four-piece" that have been tipped for great things in 2012. Along with bands like The Internet and The Web, Girl Band are not the most Google-friendly band, but their tunes more than make up for it!
The band are: Dara Kiely (Vocals), Alan Duggan (Guitar), Daniel Fox (Bass), Adam Faulkner (Drums). And yes, we noticed it too, no girls...

FAWS IN THE FIVE-TRACK SHUFFLE - WEDNESDAY, FEB 15

Faws.jpg

This Dublin musician/producer released one of the most glorious EPs you'll hear on Christmas Eve. He/she has chosen to remain anonymous, and has been gaining much acclaim for the aforementioned 'Antonym' EP - subtle electronics fashioned beautifully into tunes that are perfect for the twilight hours.

DRUMMER OF EUROSONIC HIT BAND DIES

Norwegians Honningbarna were one the surprise hits of Eurosonic 2012, and in a really sad turn the band announced that the drummer, Anders Askildsen Eikås (20) died in a car crash on January 31. Honningbarna means honey children and they come  from Kristiansand.  Prolific bloggers Jim Carroll and Nialler 9 not to mention Dan and many other reviewers reckoned they were one of the best acts at this year's event.

Dan will have their Eurosonic set on his show Thursday 23  Feb

New Free.jpg
If one could imagine what it would sound like if The Rolling Stones recorded with The Pogues, then you're nearly there! The reaction from an unsuspecting audience when seeing The New Free live is "I've really never heard anything like this before",  "Too Many Drugs" is a killer tune and also on that release is  "You Shook Me (Medley)" by AC/DC and Shane McGowan. Also drafted in for the session was Jerry O'Connor (Four Men and a Dog- famed banjo, fiddle and mandolin player) who is James' dad!

THE ORANGE SOUND IN THE 2fm STUDIO SESSION - MONDAY, JANUARY 24

The Orange Sound.jpg

The Orange Sound is the project of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Steven Rice, who has performed as both a band member and solo artist extensively in Ireland and the UK, receiving radio airplay in both countries along the way.

The Orange Sound's music has eclectic influences, ranging from the crunch of Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters, the stark indie of The Cure, and the harmony and melody of Crosby, Stills and Nash - all blended into a modern, current sound. The songs are both catchy and poignant, appealing in equal measure to the angst-ridden introvert who yearns for a slice of real-life emotion, to the air-punching extrovert who simply wants to rock.

The Orange Sound is currently gigging and recording in Ireland, with plans to make his debut release in early 2012.

AFTER THE EXPLOSIONS IN THE 2FM SESSION - POSTPONED UNTIL A LATER DATE:

After The Explosions.jpg

After the Explosions are David O'Brien (vox/guitar/synth), Dave Hanratty (drums), Noel Traynor (guitar/textures) and Garry Toner (synth/piano/backing vox).
The band formed in 2008 and it quickly became apparent that the music they created together was something that none of them had expected. Combining more alternative elements that bring to mind such bands as Nine Inch Nails and This Will Destroy You, After the Explosions throw a little something extra of their own into the mix as they combine heavy and melodic vocals, textured guitars, dark synths, piano and tribal drums, creating a powerful and complex sound that stands defiantly apart.

CARRIED BY WAVES IN 2FM SESSION - WEDNESDAY, JAN 4:

Carried By Waves.jpg

2011 was a busy year for Carried By Waves, and one marked by considerable progress; A debut audio/visual show in January was closely followed by a headline slot at the Oiche Bealtaine festival.
By June they were selected to play at the Cork leg of the FMC tour, and in August they were among the acts chosen to play at the hard Working Class Heores festival. This was followed in September by a performance at The Electric Picnic. 2012 promises to be a fruitful year for Carried By Waves.

FUNERAL SUITS IN REPEAT 2FM STUDIO SESSION - MONDAY, DECEMBER 19

Funeral Suits 2011.jpg

Funeral Suits spent the best part of two years holed up in a disused office space in deepest North County Dublin, writing, rehearsing and at times venturing out to play as special guests for Franz Ferdinand, Passion Pit, The Maccabees, Local Natives amongst others. Their debut album, with acclaimed producer Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths), is due out later in March 2012.  Funeral Suits singles 'Colour Fade' and 'Health' are enjoying support from 2FM's Dan Hegarty, BBC Radio 1 DJ's Zane Lowe, Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens.
After a very successful 2011, we're repeating their 2fm session - a real gem.

STANO IN REPEAT 2FM STUDIO SESSION - TUESDAY, DECEMBER 20

Stano.jpg

Stano came in and recorded this session in late 2010 (his first Session in a decade and a half). A self-confessed 'non-musician', Stano has completely shunned historical achievements in any musical form, opting instead for a naive working method that formulates sound out of an organic framework.

Most people if they were to attempt something like this would end up with a selection of indiscriminate noise works of unbearably low quality, but Stano's intuitive grasp of sonic architecture has resulted in possibly the most individual hybrid of rock, experimental and electronic music ever to come out of Ireland...

SUZIE'S ASHES IN THE 2FM SESSION - MONDAY DEC 12

Suzies Ashes.jpg
Continuing our series of recording the several offshoots of Humanzi... The origin of Suzies Ashes lay in Berlin as far back as 2007 Taking his signature riffs from former band, Dublin hedonists Humanzi, Colm Rutledge bolts them onto industrial strength electronic beats.
The Humanzi era helped Colm become the hugely accomplished live performer that he is today. With his former band he toured incessantly, playing huge shows alongside Pixies, Foo Fighters, The
Strokes, Kings Of Leon, to name but a few... and also toured at length with Peaches, Juliette Lewis, Dirty Pretty Things, and more throughout the UK and Europe. All of this experience means that
despite having to start from square one with Suzies Ashes, Rutledge knows what he is doing, to put it mildly.

THE ELECTRIC PENGUINS   IN THE 2FM SESSION - TUESDAY DEC 13

Electric Penguins (Photo by Kelvin Hudson).jpg

Bonded by influences from Kraftwerk to David Lynch movies and much besides Electric Penguins formed amidst a mutual love of vintage instruments, prog-rock and 70's electro legends. The group (these days - Paul Murphy and Mark Cummins) released their debut album in 2007 to substantial press acclaim and promising radio support. Critical praise for the group's second album entitled "II", has come in the form of plentiful airplay. Indeed "II" was among Dan's Top 10 albums of the year. Lead single "Highgate Hill" has delighted media and muso alike.
The Penguins talents can also be heard on Channel 4's "Sounds From The City" series in partnership with BOBCOM.com. The pioneering independent music website charged Electric Penguins with composing and recording its 'score' and incidental stings for not only the Channel 4 series but also its entire launch and accompanying activities.

LAFARO IN THE FIVE-TRACK SHUFFLE - WEDNESDAY DEC 14

LaFaro.jpg
Those dangerous Rock N Rollers LaFaro supply the tracks for this week's Five-Track Shuffle. The Belfast band released their second album 'Easy Meet' in September. They are in their own words "A wrecking ball of a band. Their rhythmic post-hardcore is designed to pulve...rize dance floors and leave no bottle of beer undrunk - this is music as it should be - We hark back to time when rock music was still fun"

THE NEW FREE IN THE 2FM SESSION - TUESDAY, DEC 6

New Free.jpg
If one could imagine what it would sound like if The Rolling Stones recorded with The Pogues, then you're nearly there! The reaction from an unsuspecting audience when seeing The New Free live is "I've really never heard anything like this before"  "Too Many Drugs" is a killer tune and also on that release  is  "You Shook Me (Medley)" by AC/DC and Shane McGowan. Watch out for Christmas single, "Noelle's Burden"..Also drafted in for the session was Jerry O'Connor ( 4 Men and a Dog- famed banjo, fiddle and mandolin player) who is James' dad!

The Cranberries 1993.jpg

By popular demand (or perhaps gentle persuasion) Dan brings you The Cranberries Fanning Session from 1993. The mid and late 1990s proved to be a highly successful time for The Cranberries, and this session catches the Limerick band in excellent form.
The band will release a new Album 'Roses' in February.
